Year 5A. Last week in German we did 2 crosswords and 1 ‘Find a Word. After that we went to swimming and we did 2 laps of Breastroke, 2 laps of Freestyle, 2 laps of Backstroke and 2 laps of whatever you wanted. In Art we did oil pastel drawings of boomerangs. (Karolina Urbanowicz)
February 24th Year 5A. We made clay boomerangs and in Maths groups we went on the computers and did think tanks. We learnt how to send emails. We did Science and looked at different types of crystals through magnifying glass. In Maths groups we made paper planes and measured the distance using a trundle wheel in metres. (Karolina Urbanowicz) Year 5C last week completed our Aboriginal dot paintings. We also started reading our term one novel ‘Holes’- which we enjoy listening to. Today is also Miss Dunsdon’s last day with us. She has been a fantastic student teacher and we wish her all the best. (Callum Page) March 3rd Year 5A continued presenting our talks. Our talks cover aspects of Aboriginal Culture, Australian timeline and our Autobiography. We also finished painting our clay boomerangs and took them home. They all look great. In Maths Groups we played Rummikub and Lego. (Karolina Urbanowicz) Year 5B learnt about how “p” and “h” can make the sound “ff” when they are put together. In German we did an activity about Europe . In SOSE we had to colour in Aboriginal Art. We could choose from a goanna, kookaburra, and kangaroo. On Friday we practised for an upcoming test, which includes spelling and comprehension. (Jack Morris) 10TH maRCH 5A had our Robotics Workshop. We got into teams and tried to get our robot through an obstacle course. At about 10.30 we went down to Jane’s class and met our prep buddies. On Thursday we started our Aboriginal dot paintings. On Friday we finished them. In English we practised our quotation marks. (Karolina Urbanowicz) 5B went to Robotics Workshop last Wednesday. We learnt how to teach a robot how to move in different directions. We have been doing lots of maths and comprehension tests. In German we watched “Der Mann Der Hünd und das Mächen”. (Jack Morris) 5C have been practicing hard for the Year 5 tests. On Wednesday we did Robotics and learned the basics. We also did crossword art where we have to write our name and add designs around it. We’ve been reading “Holes” and once we read the book we will watch the movie! (Callum Page) 24th March 5A were in maths groups last week and we were doing robotics and learning how to get the robots to go in a circle, in a straight line and when it comes to a dark area it goes backwards for a few seconds. In Art we did tissue paper ripping into shapes such as squares, circles and triangles. On Friday we went to the Arts building and shared stories for Wakakirri with the other Year 5 children. Karolina Urbanowicz 5B went to the Arts building with 5A and 5C to present our thoughts on Wakakirri, which is going to be about convicts and families coming to Australia. On Tuesday we had Miss Hamill for a short period. Jack Morris 31st MArch 5A did Aboriginal Paintings in Art. We practised last year’s Maths Test for the one this year. Now the computers are working, we are sending more e-mails. We are also doing laps everyday for the Moove ’n’ Groove. Karolina Urbanowicz 5B started an extra P.E. Session with the Yr 4s. On Tuesday we had Miss McNaughton and Mrs Chester for half of Thursday. Jack Morris
APRIL 5A went to St Helena Island last week. We learnt how badly the prisoners were treated, but had a great day! We also listened to two stories for ANZAC Day. These stories were “Simpson and His Donkey” and “Why Are They Marching Daddy?” After we read them, we had a discussion about ANZAC Day. Finn brought in a game of‘2-Up’, which is Australia’s National Game and we all, had a go at flipping the coins of the ‘kip’. We also have a Student Teacher called Mrs Nutt. We have done lots of practise for the Year 5 Test. Karolina Urbanowicz 5B went on an excursion to St Helena Island, where we learnt about daily life in the prisons. In German we made ‘Find-A-Words’. On Friday 5B went to the ANZAC Ceremony. After the ceremony we completed two work sheets on ANZAC Day. 5B is enjoying their week back. Jack Morris 12th May Yr 5A. Our Student teacher, Miss Nutt taught us for most of the week. It was her last week in our class so we had a party on Friday. In Art we made Mothers Day presents and cards. In Maths groups we did Think Tank and Robotics. (Karolina Urbanowicz) Yr 5B started our Power Point presentations about Bushrangers last week. We have also been doing many practise tests for the NAPLAN test this week. We are all very sad because today is our student teacher, Miss McSweeney’s last day. We also learnt about space and shadows in Science. (Katherine Viney)
26th June 5B stayed in for both breaks on Wednesday and Thursday. In German we played a fun game. On Thursday and Friday we had Mr Penny. Jack Morris 2nd June 5A learnt about Burke and Wills and John Oxley and how they have contributed to Australia in SOSE. We have written our own Dreamtime stories and are typing them up and publishing them. We continued our Science Unit on the Moon and Earth. We are having lots of fun doing challenges in Robotics with Sebastian’s Mum. Karolina Urbanowicz 5B learnt about shadows in Science. In German we learnt about our Family Trees. 5B have a new Student Teacher called Miss McCauly. I hope she has a good time with us. In Art we are making a picture with curved lines. On Thursday and Friday we had Mr Penny. Jack Morris 5C started learning about the Solar System last week. We are doing research into the things that we do not know about. In Art we’re taking pictures of faces that we drew last term and making them look like they are reflected in a broken mirror. It looks really interesting. Callum Page
16th June 5A went to a camp at Midginbil Hill last week. It took us about three and a half hours to get there, but it was worth it. We got split into 5 groups and did each activity at a different time. The activities were: horse-riding, archery, rock climbing, problem solving, initiative games and pioneering. We had lots of fun!! Karolina Urbanowicz 5B went on Year 5 Camp last week. Monday was a holiday and on Tuesday we were focused on Camp! At Camp there was great food and fun activities. The activities were: rock climbing, initiative games, problem solving, pioneering, horse-riding and archery. I’d like to say Thank You to the Year 5 Teachers and Student Teachers. Thank You! Jack Morris 23rd June 5A have been doing our History Powerpoint on Australia and we are getting close to finishing our published narratives. We have also done Bush-Ranger posters. 4th August 5B did almost nothing last week but Wakakirri, as we have so much to do before our performance on Thursday. We also watched the Wakakirri Performance from 2007 which some of us were involved in when we were in Year 3. The Props are coming together as we only have a few more to make. Katherine Viney 1st September 5A got back in to the habit of Wakakirri Practice for the Finals (but this time we practised only on Thursday, just to perfect our act). Because we got a new Student Teacher (Miss Hurst) we played a lot of games with her. She gave our Maths lessons a big boost and we are enjoying Maths a bit more. Free Dress Day was still fun, even though we have had a lot of them lately. Also, our Ancient Egypt stuff isn’t going too badly. We learnt about the art of Frontalism. (Oscar Stone) 5B started our drafts for our Ancient Egypt Time Travel Tour brochures. In Maths we learnt about degrees and in Sport we worked on our Bowling skills. On Thursday we did Wakakirri in the last session and on Friday we had our usual Friday Testing. (Katherine Viney) 5C is getting back to work on our Wakakirri play. The Finals are in September. We hope we will win in our division. In Class, Oral Language is beginning again, with a few new activities added on. We really like our new German teacher, Mrs Rothwell. Right now she is teaching us about the Olympics and Capital Cities around the World. We’re all looking forward to having lots of fun at the Fete on Saturday. ( Lena van Swinderen) 8th September 5A got ready for the School Fete last week. We got our ‘nature-resembling’ Garden Sculpture ready. Everybody had a go. Even though it didn’t get in on Thursday, we kept going. Also our classmate Amasha left, unfortunately she didn’t come back in time to get a Father’s Day Gift. 5A wishes her well at her new school. (Oscar Stone) 5B continues working on our Ancient Egypt brochures and in Maths we did more on decimals and degrees. We are all looking forward to Thursday we are going to the Wakakirri Finals. I hope everyone had fun at the Fete on Saturday. (Katherine Viney) 5C are designing brochures on Ancient Egypt for our imaginary time travel agency. The package includes a 5 day tour of Ancient Egypt and all the interesting things you might find there like the building of the Sphinx and the tomb of Tutankhamen. For the Silent Art Auction at the Fete we created a painting of Tutankhamen’s Death Mask. This Thursday the Yr5s are going to the Queensland State Finals for Wakakirri. We’re hoping to win again! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at the Fete on Saturday. I know that I did! ( Lena van Sinderen) 15th September 5B participated in the Wakakirri Finals, along with the other Yr 5 classes. We are very happy that we came 3 rd overall. Thank you to everyone in Yr 5 for participating and all the teachers who helped. Thank you to everyone who bought ice-creams last Tuesday. (Katherine Viney) 27th October 5A did the Ceramic Art Workshop and found our inner skills of Art. We also did the ‘Family Planning’ Workshop and lots of fitness. Also, well done to the Band and Strings people who participated in the Brisbane Bands Competition on Saturday. Our weather unit, where we have learned about meteorology is a fun subject for the term. (Oscar Stone) 5B continued learning about weather. We learnt about different types of lightning and how lightning is made. In Technology we started making our board games and in German we watched a video about Berlin to help us with our brochures we are making. (Katherine Viney) 5C has started a weather and natural disasters unit. Last week we learned about thunder, lightning and clouds. We are also doing science experiments in groups. A few that we have done recently include making clouds in a bottle and air pressure experiments. On Friday we worked on our Christmas KidDoodle Cards, and I think they all look pretty good. Over the weekend the Chapel Hill State School Bands participated in a Band Competition. I hope everyone had fun and played well. Have a great week! ( Lena van Swinderen) 3rd November Yr 5A. Last week we had the last “Family Planning” episode. In Maths we got a surprise Test question and in Literacy we are learning to write explanations. On Friday we got 15 minutes of free-time. (Oscar Stone) Yr 5B started writing our rough copies of our Weather Report. In Maths we learnt about angles and in German we did a word search. In Art we used pastels and drew a picture of the sky and then we wrote descriptions about them. (Katherine Viney) 10th November 5A had a very funny Swimming timetable last week, which messed up instrumental music a bit. Apart from that, it was a very casual week. In Maths we did a unit on Algebra and in Literacy we are learning a poem called ‘The Village Blacksmith’, which we have been practising at home for our Pullenvale Excursion today. We had a sweep last Tuesday for the Melbourne Cup, which we did for a bit of fun. Oscar Stone 5B finished our board games last week. Yesterday we started filming our weather reports and in German we are almost finished with our posters about sight-seeing in Berlin. In Swimming we worked on our butterfly stroke and this week we will be timed. On Friday we will be going to Pullenvale. Katherine Viney
