From Mrs Day

This term with the assistance of Mrs Hall our Support Learning Teacher, we are trialling two new programmes.

One - Chill Out Club - is designed to provide alternative lunchtime activities for children who may wish to enjoy inside play. Mrs Hall has gathered a very large collection of board games and building games that are made available to children of all grades in our Arts Building on a Thursday and Friday. Last week was the first time it was offered and many children came along and enjoyed this alternative form of play.

The second new program is Year 6 Reading Buddies. A large number of Year 6 students have volunteered their time before school to read aloud to children in our Early Years. Like anything new, there are still some organisational bugs to iron out but hopefully this trial will lead to a program we can start right at the beginning of 2010 to the mutual benefit of both the early years children and our volunteer Reading Buddies.

My sincere thanks go to Mrs Hall for her commitment and to the parents and children involved in supporting both these programmes

Active School Travel

For 2010 Chapel Hill State School has been accepted into this BCC program to encourage us to walk, bike or bus to school. This will help reduce our carbon footprint, reduce traffic congestion around school, increase safety and increase our fitness levels. If you would like to help with the program, you are welcome to attend our first meeting with David, our AST officer at a date to be advised. For more info, please ring Jenny Strodl 3878 6957.

Christmas Hamper Collection

As in previous years the RE Teachers are organising a collection of non-perishable items of food which will be given to the Inala Anglican Church who regularly distribute help to struggling families in that area.

We feel that it is important to help the children think beyond themselves especially at Christmas time.

The RE teachers will place decorated boxes in each classroom and over the next 3 weeks we would ask for your generosity in helping your children to select one or two items and take them into their class box at any time they wish.  They will be presented to a Representative of the Inala Church at the RE Breakup which will be in the Hall on Friday 27th Nov. between 12 and 1.30.  The Yrs 1 to 3 have their breakup from  12-12.30 and Yrs 4 to 7 from 12.45 to 1.15 and any interested parents are most welcome.

Thank you for the privilege of teaching your children over this year and we wish you a peaceful and happy Christmas.   Helen Lucas (RE Coordinator)

Class Captains

2B went swimming at Jindalee Pool last week. We drew dragons, coloured them in and painted the background. We also did a Maths Test. Jack Daly

2C did some Science experiments during class. They were really interesting. After our Swimming lessons, we were allowed to swim in the big pool at Jindalee. Jacob Betts

3A has nearly finished all their fishes for their Art project. Afterwards, we are going to work on the coral. 3A is having a great time in class and had swimming yesterday. Joseph Abbey

3B had swimming on Monday and in PE we did an obstacle course, skipping and played ‘Cops and Robbers’. On Tuesday we had a Maths test, and in the afternoon we listened to some Aboriginal Legends. On Thursday and Friday we worked on our posters of a State of Australia and in Music we learnt new songs and a fun new game. George Jackson

3C made Aboriginal-like dot paintings last week. We painted the background and then made the dots with cotton buds. It took a long time but they all look great. We also did our SOSE test and we learnt about some Aussie icons and inventions. We had a very busy week. Brooke Johnston

4AB continued our sea creature mobiles. 4AB practised basketball in PE. In Music we practised rhythms. With Frau Rothwell we are making posters for the Christmas Markets. In Swimming we are getting ready for the carnival. We finished learning about Erosion and weather in Science and we are continuing our Discovering Democracy unit in SOSE. We made the ‘Cantilever’ bridge. It is a type of truss bridge that is called a suspended span because it hangs between the two arms and does not rest on the pier. Georgia Wilson and Jordan Yee

4C finished doing their hard work on the body groups last week. We finished doing the 3s, 7s, and 9s timetable competition. On Melbourne Cup Day we got horses and the winner, 2 nd place, 3 rd place and last place got a lolly. Shannon Ryan

5A had a very funny Swimming timetable last week, which messed up instrumental music a bit. Apart from that, it was a very casual week. In Maths we did a unit on Algebra and in Literacy we are learning a poem called ‘The Village Blacksmith’, which we have been practising at home for our Pullenvale Excursion today. We had a sweep last Tuesday for the Melbourne Cup, which we did for a bit of fun. Oscar Stone

5B finished our board games last week. Yesterday we started filming our weather reports and in German we are almost finished with our posters about sight-seeing in Berlin. In Swimming we worked on our butterfly stroke and this week we will be timed. On Friday we will be going to Pullenvale. Katherine Viney

6A finished off our Religion assignments. In Art we started to sculpt our ‘Funky Diva Angels’. Some of the class went to sing or play at Indooroopilly S/T in the Choir, Intermediate Band, Senior Band or Strings. We are making our propositions for our Christmas Markets in German. On Friday, Sport was cancelled because of the rain, so we watched ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’. Sophie Lougheed

7C have been looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 10000 in Maths. We also looked at locating thousandths on a number line. We also did a Science test and a Maths test which went well. We have been doing our picture books, which are due in on Wednesday, the same with our orals. Some of us have started work on their masks. Michael Williams
